What is a kundali?

A kundali is a Vedic birth chart — a diagram of where the planets stood at the moment and place you were born. It is drawn from three facts: your date of birth, your time of birth to the minute, and your birthplace. From those, the chart fixes your rising sign and the position of all nine grahas across twelve houses.

How your kundali is calculated

Your birth moment is converted to a Julian day, corrected for your timezone, and combined with your latitude and longitude. From there each graha is placed along the ecliptic using the Swiss Ephemeris — the same library professional astrology software relies on.

The positions are sidereal, measured against the fixed stars using the Lahiri ayanamsa rather than the moving vernal equinox that Western astrology uses. The two systems currently differ by about 24 degrees, which is most of a sign, and it is the usual reason a Vedic chart disagrees with a Western one about your sun sign.

Houses use the whole-sign system: the sign rising at birth becomes the entire first house, the next sign the second, and so on. It is the oldest and most widely used scheme in Indian jyotish.

Why birth time matters so much

The ascendant moves roughly one degree every four minutes, which means it changes sign about every two hours. An imprecise birth time does not shift your chart slightly — it can rotate every house placement in it, and with them the reading of career, marriage, health and family.

If your exact time is unknown, a chart can still be cast from the date alone. Moon sign, nakshatra and dasha remain valid, because they depend on the moon rather than the horizon. What becomes unreliable is anything house-based, and an honest reading should tell you which parts those are.

Where a birth certificate exists, use the time on it. Where it does not, a remembered approximation is better than nothing as long as the reading is treated accordingly.

Common questions

Is the kundali free?

Generating your chart is free. The formatted PDF report, with the dasha timeline and remedies, is the paid product.

What details do I need?

Date of birth, time of birth as precisely as you know it, and place of birth. Pick your city from the suggestions so the coordinates are exact — latitude determines your ascendant.

North Indian or South Indian format?

The chart is drawn in the North Indian diamond format, where the houses stay fixed and the signs move around them.

Can I get my kundali matched for marriage?

Yes — kundali matching runs ashtakoot guna milan and explains each of the eight kootas rather than only giving a score out of 36.

Where are my past kundalis?

Everything you generate is saved to your account under My Kundalis and can be re-downloaded at any time.
